Suwon plays a significant role in Korea’s history. It is one of the few cities where the centre is completely surrounded by an intact historic wall: Hwaseong Fortress, built in 1794. Walking the complete wall is about 5.7 Kilometers – including a hill climb. The views across the city, the various structures and the park-like surroundings of the fortress are a treat. So are the many cafés near the North Gate Janganmun (Our 20th Century Café is one of them – see previous post).
You will also pass by Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, which is definitely worth a visit because it offers many insights into the court life at the king’s temporary residence (away from historic Seoul). (Photo with warrior performance courtesy of my friend Jeon EunJae)
We had so much fun and I got the inside track in Suwon because of you – thank you!

I have travelled to 31 countries so far. What exploring means to me: Venture into the Yukon backcountry by snowmobile - arriving at spectacular vistas with my buddy; enjoying world cafés (non-franchise please!) and the interesting conversations that blossom there; collaborating with free spirits. I feel attracted to people who truly care and have a backbone. Accountability and life-long learning are important to me. Political correctness is not my thing.
My interests include all things aviation, the global economy, entrepreneurship, drumming (funky grooves!), winter photography and Korea. I’m passionate about mentoring and coaching others. I am tutoring professionals from around the globe in conversational German and English.
