My wife and I recently spent a week Sacramento, California’s capital. We like to visit churches – mostly for their atmosphere, architecture and historic ambiance. So we stumbled into this extraordinary mass at The Cathedral Of The Blessed Sacrament: Jaime Soto, the Bishop Of Sacramento did the “Blessing of the Oils”, providing the whole Diocese of Sacramento for a year. All priests of the diocese came for their Renewal of “Commitment to Priestly Service”. About 30% of the congregation were Hispanic, and the vast majority of all present knew the liturgy. Masses in Spanish and Chinese are also being offered by the Cathedral. (all photos are my own)

The Priests are marching in
We came early and witnessed the congregation take their seats, and the procession of priests, followed by the bishop and his entourage. What amazed us was that many of the priests stopped along the benches to greet and even hug some of their sheep. Many people called out to their priests to greet them. The warm informality was beautiful and moving. The crowd literally cheered on their priests. This kind of folksiness is what any church should be about.

The Choir chimes in
When we arrived, the choir was still rehearsing, accompanied by the organ, a piano and two violins. Among the wonderful music, some solo voices caught our attention.

A beautiful Cathedral it is
The atmosphere was made whole by the beautiful architecture, with stunning windows.
A place were people of all stripes can come together and feel safe.

Yes, the Catholic Church could do some reforms……but this Mass transcended any doubt about the church’s role in society
For the benefit of all, I hope that women can be catholic priests and that catholic priests are allowed to marry. I also hope that the Catholic Church will abolish unnecessary bureaucracy, starting in Rome.
But this ceremony was so dignified, festive and human that it transcended any scepticism. People were so welcoming. We were deeply moved and felt respect and joy.
We thank all the people who made this mass so wonderful!

Epilogue
Earlier in the day: When I asked the security officer at the entrance to the California State Capitol if the building was open to visitors, he said: Of course, come on in! This is the house of the people! We freely walked the impressive halls. Two beautiful things in one day!
